Configuration

Once you have determined that you have all of the requirements needed to connect to the LAWN, you will need to configure your device to see the GTwireless (LAWN) network.

DHCP

Because the LAWN works by using the first available IP address it sees, the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is used in configuring your device. DHCP is an Internet protocol for automating the configuration of computers that use TCP/IP. DHCP can be used to automatically assign IP addresses. If you try to insert a static IP address, it will not work.

Network Name/SSID

Your network name or SSID needs to be called GTwireless. Keep in mind that the capitalization is important here. The WEP key that you use works when "GTwireless" is it's network name.

Wireless Configuration Examples

Below are examples of how to setup your device to access the LAWN using the following operating systems:

Windows Vista

Windows XP - Service Pack 2

Windows XP - Service Pack 1

Windows NT 4

Windows 2000

Windows 95/98

Mac OSX

Mac 8.5 to 9.X

Windows CE

Palm OS

For those of you having difficulty associating with GTwireless, here are a few tips:

On Windows XP SP2, delete both the FASTPASS and GTwireless entries in the prefered networks list, and replace only the GTwireless profile as the top item in the list.

Some users have also had success by using uppercase letters when entering the WEP key.

Wireless connection dectected but can not connect to network. It seems that I can not get an IP from DHCP for whatever reason. I went through all of the obvious check points: Network ID, Wep Key, and DHCP. I tried removing the network from my perferred list then re-adding it. Any other suggestions? (probably something stupid).

I want to share my experiences I made when configuring Windows XP SP2 for GTwireless:
As soon as you configured GTwireless the list of "Preferred Networks" contains the following item: "GTwireless (Automatic)". If you ever explicitly disconnect from GTwireless by pressing the "Disconnect" button in the "Choose a wireless Network" dialog (for switching to another network, for example), the entry in the list of "Preferred Networks" will change to "GTwireless (Manual)". From this time on, you're not able to connect to GTwireless anymore. The solution is to remove the "GTwireless" entry and re-create it. This is annoying, but there's no other way to change it from "Manual" back to "Automatic". This seems to be a bug in Windows XP SP2. For more information please refere to the MS Knowledge Base article 907405.

Anyone know how to configure a PSP to connect to the LAWN network?

In order to get your PSP to route traffic out of the LAWN, you are going to need to get at least Firmware version 2.0 (which included a web browser which you will need in order to enter your username and password).

Information on updating your firmware can be found here:

http://www.us.playstation.com/psp.aspx?id=softwareupdate

Until I can get screenshots from my PSP, you might find this page useful:

How to get T-Mobile MDA onto LAWN (Windows Mobile 5.0):
Go to Settings:Connections:Wireless Lan:LEAP and delete anything to do with GTwireless. If there is a setting in here for Tech, you will never get on.
OK. Now Settings:Connections:Network Cards. If you are in signal area, you should see a GTwireless trying to connect (forever). Click on it (don't linger or 'right-click') to bring up Configure Wireless Network:General tab. Network name: GTwireless (case sensitive!). Connects to: The Internet. Network Key tab:Authentication Open; Data Encryption: WEP. Don't check "The key is automatically provided"! Don't check Ad Hoc. Enter the network key (given to you by OIT) CAREFULLY, making sure the letters are in CAPS, and no dollar sign in front. 802.1x tab: Leave box unchecked. OK. Now the GTwireless in the Configure Wireless Networks window should say Connected instead of Connecting, and the antenna's arrows should have stopped moving in the status bar at the top.

If anyone has try just about everything and keeps having emails bounced back because for any reason the outgoing mailserver rejects your emails, then you might consider installing this program http://www.jiwire.com/
It will work. It is also useful when you logon to other hotspots while you travel and you don't know the name of the outgoing mailserver.
While the program is on, you just use your Outlook or Eudora as you would do at your home or office.

The only drawback is that it allows you to send only 200 messages per day.
Presumably your emails are just sent to another server who then sends it to its final destination.

I have tried it here in the US and also at a number of European hotspots and it works.

For connecting a Nintendo Wii or Nintendo DS to LAWN, see my post at the address below:

http://www.lawn.gatech.edu/help/connectivity.html

The guide is written for Nintendo Wii, but the same thing works for the Nintendo DS.

The DS' Wi-Fi Connect manual has instructions for setting the same information fields (IP, DNS, Gateway, etc.) on the DS, so menu navigation is the only real difference. The concept is the same: login an IP address on your laptop, and port it to your wi-fi gaming device of choice by copying the connection information verbatim.

I'm also having issues with Vista Business. I see all of these "Unnamed Network" networks with security enabled access, but since GTwireless doesn't broadcast its ssid, I don't know which one it is. And programming it in doesn't help, either. This also happens on my home network, which doesn't broadcast its SSID and has a WEP key. I have to guess which one it is based on signal strength (not too hard here) and then give it the SSID and key **every time**. Any ideas?

Okay guys I just succeeded in setting up lawn for vista so here is how you do it.

- go to start
- control panel
- internet and network
- network and sharing center
- Under Tasks choose
Connect to a network
- Select Set up a connection or network
- choose Manually connect to a wireless network
- For the security type select WEP
- To obtain the network name and security key
go to https://auth.lawn.gatech.edu/ssid_wep.php and login using your gt account
Important: Do not share the security key and network name since it is for the protection of students, staff and faculty from outside intruders.

One more thing for Vista
After all these
-Go to control panel
- click on Network and internet
- click on Network and sharing center
- click on manage wireless networks (to the left)
-click on GTwireless
-make sure the third option, "connect even if th network is not broadcasting" is checked
- click ok

In the newest version of the Linux distribution, Ubuntu (Feisty Fawn, 7.04), the included Gnome or KDE (for Kubuntu) wireless manager is the easiest way to log onto LAWN. You should make sure that your wireless is already configured by testing it with a known wireless internet connection.

If your wireless is already working at home or elsewhere, you will see connection bars in the upper-right hand corner of your screen near the date and time. This is the wireless manager. If there is no current wireless connection, there will be what appears to be a blank monitor in the same area. If neither appear, you can add this feature by right-clicking in this area or elsewhere on the task bar, and selecting 'Add to Panel...'

Right click on the wireless manager, and select 'Connect to Other Wireless Network...' Type in the SSID in the "Network Name" prompt, select 'WEP 64/128-bit Hex' next to Wireless Security, and input the provided key into the space that appears below. Then press 'Connect,' and you should be able to login to the LAWN network from your web browser!

Problem SOLVED:
After setting everything up according to the instructions, it was necessary to Disconnect from FASTPASS a few times and hit refresh. This should be in the instructions.

The problem may be path-dependent. I connected to FASTPASS in order to get the WEP key (as opposed to finding a landline), then I put in the WEP key. My setup was "poisoned" from the start.

Please provide a "Log in to LAWN" link at the top of every page that is accessed off "www.lawn.gatech.edu"

I have been using LAWN on GT laptops since it came up, and it has never been as messed-up as it is now. Each day when I boot up my laptop and try to get to LAWN it seems like a new way has been found to confuse users, and I have to wade through numerous irrelevant pages of small print before fortuitously coming up on the "log in to LAWN" link.

This is extremely frustrating.

PLEASE get someone to put the LAWN login link prominently on every page.

Hello, all,

Is there any known way to connect a Zune HD to the network as of now? I'm having issues with MAC identification - if I preregister my device using my laptop, the internet works, but after I standby or shut off my device, I have to redo the process.

Trying to connect to the network using my device fails - it just says that the Zune could not identify with the network. I am unable to go to LAWN from my Zune itself, which means I have to use my laptop to register it every time I use it - very counterproductive.

Any help would be appreciated!

For those of you with Nokia phones, I had trouble configuring mine, but figured it out.

Here's what you need to do. I have a n79 (which is running s60) so this should work on all s60 phones.

Go to the WLAN Wizzard in your Tools. Select GTwireless and hit options (should be your left softkey) ----->Edit access point

Change the security mode to WEP

Then go to WLAN security settings .
Your WEP key in use should be #1 and authentication type should be Open

Then go to WEP Key settings and apply these settings:
WEP encryption to 64 bits
WEP key format to hexadecimal
WEP key to your WEP key (you can get it here https://auth.lawn.gatech.edu/ssid_wep.php)

Go back to your home menu screen and select Web. Connect via GTwireless. Then select Go to web address and enter the LAWN login page and go from there. ( I would recommend the stay loggen in for 15 days option)

There you go, that should work.
