Mac OS 8.5-9.0 Example In order to use Georgia Tech's LAWN (Local Area Walkup/Wireless Network) your computer must have a network adapter installed (wired or wireless), and be configured to use DHCP to obtain a network address. If your machine has been configured to work on the campus residential network, the same settings should work for the walk up ports. Instructions for installing a wireless network card is explained first. In order to use a wireless card in a Macintosh, you will need to install the AirPort software. You can check to see if the AirPort software is installed by opening the Apple Extras folder on the hard disk and looking for AirPort. Download and install the software if it is not already present. Open the Airport software (in the Apple Extras/AirPort folder) and be sure the box next to "Allow selection of closed networks" is checked. This will allow the use of private networks. Select "Other..." from the "Choose network:" dropdown and enter the network name "GTwireless" and the password provided by the OIT Customer Support Center or your local support representative. You may also get this password online. (Note that in order to input a hexadecimal number in this field you must precede it with a "$"). Click "OK" to complete network selection, and close the AirPort window.
Open the TCP/IP control panel. If you are using MacOS 8.5 or above, you have the option of saving multiple configurations. This feature makes it more convenient to setup the network using different configurations by selecting from a small group of presets. From the File menu select "Configurations...K" and select the Default configuration and click "Duplicate". Then you will be prompted to choose a name for the resulting new copy (eg. LAWN). Then select "Make Active" to invoke and edit the new preset. Confirm that "Connect via:" indicates the port you will be using to connect to the LAWN. For a walkup port this will read "Ethernet". For a wireless connection is will read "AirPort Card" or "Wavelan/IEEE" Make sure all of the fields (DHCP Client ID, Name server addr. etc.) are blank. Select "Using DHCP Server" from the "Configure:" drop down list. Close the control panel. Open a web browser, and you will see the login screen to connect to the web. If the login screen does not appear click on any link to force the browser to attempt a network connection. Click the login button and you will be prompted for your prism account information. Enter the information, and click authenticate. You will be connected to the network. |
