Windows 2000 Example

In order to use Georgia Tech's LAWN (Local Area Walkup/Wireless Network) your computer must have a network adapter installed (wired or wireless), and be configured to use DHCP to obtain a network address. If your machine has been configured to work on the campus residential network, the same settings should work for the walk up ports. We start with instructions for installing a wireless network card.

The following instructions are meant to be helpful in installing a wireless network adapter into your portable computer. The best source of information regarding your card and drivers for it can be obtained from the manufacturer of the card. This set of instructions should help provide a guide and is here as an example of a common configuration.

Drivers for Lucent wireless network cards (identified as WaveLAN or ORiNOCO) can be obtained from the manufacturers web site. Extract the drivers from the downloaded file into a new directory (eg. c:\drivers\wavelan) This directory will contain drivers for the card as well as diagnostic software to verify it's proper function. If you are downloading the drivers on a different computer from the one where they are to be installed, each of the subdirectories created (driver, client manager, firmware) can be copied to a separate floppy disk .

Windows 2000 includes certified drivers for Lucent wireless network adapters. However, Lucent recommends installing updated drivers prior to inserting the card in the computer. Running the setup program contained in the Driver directory from the distribution archive will create a new directory containing the drivers. The default location for this directory is C:\Program Files\ORINOCO\Driver.
The second directory in the distribution archive is the client manager software. Install this by running the setup program included in this directory.

After the Client manager has been installed insert the card into your computer. This will start the "Found New Hardware" wizard. Select Search for a suitable driver for my device, and click Next. You will be presented with a list of possible locations for the drivers. Select Specify a location and click Next. You should then be prompted for location of the driver files. The default location as mentioned above is C:\Program Files\ORINOCO\Driver. After selecting this directory click OK to continue. This should copy the driver files to the C:\WINNT\System32\DRIVERS directory.

When the files are finished copying the "Add/Edit Configuration Profile" window should appear. Choose a name for the configuration you will create for use on campus. In this example we chose "GTwireless". Click on the "Edit Profile" button.
The basic configuration screen allows you to choose the network you wish to attach to. Enter the network name "GTwireless" and click on the Encryption tab.
Check the box labeled "Enable Data Security", and enter the encryption key provided to you by the OIT Technology Support Center or your local support representative. You can also get the key online. Note that the key is a 10 digit hexadecimal number and be sure to mark the button for "Use Hexadecimal".

In order to configure your computer to connect to the LAWN first login using an account that has administrative privilege on your computer. Open Network and Dial-up Connections in the Settings section of the Start menu (or in the Control Panel window) and select Local Area Connection. Right click on the Local Area Connection icon and select properties. Confirm that Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) is listed in the section labeled "Components checked are used by this connection:". If it is not installed click on the Install button and select protocol click on the Install button and select Microsoft - TCP/IP then click "OK".

Next you must configure the TCP/IP properties. Select the Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) and click the "Properties" button.

Verify that the "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" are both selected.

Click "OK" to close the TCP/IP properties window.

Click "Close" to close the Network control panel.

You will be prompted to restart your computer, wait until harddrive activity stops and click "Yes".

Your computer is now configured to use the LAWN. Open a web browser, and you will see the login screen to connect to the web. Click the login button and you will be prompted for your prism account information. Enter the information, and click authenticate. You will be connected to the network.
