Windows 95/98 Example

In order to use Georgia Tech's LAWN (Local Area Walkup/Wireless Network) your computer must have a network adapter installed (wired or wireless), and be configured to use DHCP to obtain a network address. If your machine has been configured to work on the campus residential network, the same settings should work for the walk up ports. We will start with instructions for installing a wireless network card.

The following instructions are meant to be helpful in installing a wireless network adapter into your portable computer. The best source of information regarding your card and drivers for it can be obtained from the manufacturer of the card. This set of instructions should help provide a guide and is here as an example of a common configuration.

Drivers for Lucent wireless network cards (identified as WaveLAN or ORiNOCO) can be obtained from the manufacturers web site. Extract the drivers from the downloaded file into a new directory (eg. c:\drivers\wavelan) This directory will contain drivers for the card as well as diagnostic software to verify it's proper function. If you are downloading the drivers on a different computer from the one where they are to be installed, each of the subdirectories created (driver, client manager, firmware) can be copied to a separate floppy disk .

When the wireless card is inserted into an open socket the computer should recognize the new card and the fact that drivers have not yet been installed. Choose "Driver from disk provided by hardware manufacturer" and click "Ok". You will be prompted to "Insert the manufacturer's installation disk into the drive selected." Enter the name of the directory where you saved the drivers (eg. c:\drivers\wavelan) or be sure the floppy disk with the contents from the "driver" subdirectory is in the drive and click "Ok".
A custom configuration profile is needed to access the Georgia Tech LAWN. Choose a name for the profile and click Edit Profile
Fill in the Network Name field with the name "GTwireless" then click on the Encryption tab in the Configuration window.

Check the box labeled Enable Data Security. Select "Use Hexadecimal (0-9, a-f)" and enter the encryption key provided to you by OIT Customer Support Center or your local support representative. You may also get the key online. The remaining fields (on the Advanced and Admin tabs) can be left at their default values. Click "OK" to save the configuration. You will probably receive a warning that the Client Manager is not installed. In order to install it open the directory included in the driver distribution labeled Cl_Mgr.

Run the program called Setup.exe to install the Client Manager software. When setup has completed the drivers for the card are fully installed and you should restart windows to invoke the new configuration. For help in configuring your computer to use DHCP for network address settings please see below.
In order to configure your computer to connect to the LAWN, first open the network control panel (Start/Settings/Control panel/Network) and confirm that you have installed the TCP/IP protocol. If it is not installed, click on the "Add" button and select protocol. Click on the "Add" button and select Microsoft - TCP/IP then click "OK".

Next you must configure the TCP/IP properties. If you have multiple network adapters installed (including dial up) you will see multiple entries listed for TCP/IP. Select the one associated with the network adapter you will be using to connect to the LAWN and click the "Properties" button.
It will open on the IP Address tab. Verify that "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected.
Select the Gateway tab, and verify that there are no entries. Remove any entries that appear by selecting them in the lower box and clicking "Remove".
Select the DNS configuration tab and confirm that "Disable DNS" is selected. Click "OK" to close the TCP/IP properties window Click "OK" again to close the Network control panel.

You will be prompted to restart your computer, wait until harddrive activity stops and click "Yes". Your computer is now configured to use the LAWN. Open a web browser, and you will see the login screen to connect to the web. Click the login button and you will be prompted for your prism account information. Enter the information, and click authenticate. You will be connected to the network.
