Windows NT 4 Example

In order to use Georgia Tech's LAWN (Local Area Walkup/Wireless Network) your computer must have a network adapter installed (wired or wireless), and be configured to use DHCP to obtain a network address. If your machine has been configured to work on the campus residential network, the same settings should work for the walk up ports. We start with instructions for installing a wireless network card.

The following instructions are meant to be helpful in installing a wireless network adapter into your portable computer. The best source of information regarding your card and drivers for it can be obtained from the manufacturer of the card. This set of instructions should help provide a guide and is here as an example of a common configuration.

Drivers for Lucent wireless network cards (identified as WaveLAN or ORiNOCO) can be obtained from the manufacturers web site. Extract the drivers from the downloaded file into a new directory (eg. c:\drivers\wavelan) This directory will contain drivers for the card as well as diagnostic software to verify it's proper function.

When the wireless card is inserted into an open socket the computer should recognize the new card and the fact that drivers have not yet been installed. Choose to "Manually install the driver for this card". Then select "Network Adapter" when asked to select the type of PC Card you are installing.
The Network control panel will open on the Adapters tab. Click on the "Add" button and select "Have Disk" when presented with a list of adapters. You will then be asked to insert the disk with the software provided by the manufacturer. Enter the name of the directory where you extracted the drivers earlier (c:\drivers\wavelan). The "Select OEM Option" screen should now appear listing the name of your adapter. Select the driver that matches your card and click "Ok".
The Add/Edit Configuration Profile dialog box should now be displayed. Select the first profile and click the "Edit Profile" button.

The configuration options will open with the Basic tab selected fill in the Network Name with GTwireless.

Select the Encryption Tab and check the "Enable Data Security" checkbox. Select "Use Hexadecimal" and enter the encryption key provided by your OIT Customer Support Center or your local support representative. You can also get the key online. Then click "Ok" to finish editing the profile. Click "Ok" again to close the network control panel.

In order to configure your computer to connect to the LAWN first login using an account that has administrative priveledge on your computer. Open the Network control panel and select the Protocols tab. Confirm that TCP/IP Protocol is listed. If it is not installed click on the "Add" button and select TCPIP Protocol from the bottom of the list click on the "OK" button. If you are adding the TCP/IP protocol you will be asked if you wish to use DHCP. The correct answer is "Yes".

Next you must configure the TCP/IP properties. Select the TCP/IP Protocol and click the Properties button.
Select the Adapter you will be using to connect to the LAWN and verify that "Obtain an IP address from a DHCP server" is selected. Click "OK" to close the TCP/IP properties window.

Click "Close" to close the Network control panel.

You will be prompted to restart your computer, wait until harddrive activity stops and click "Yes".

Your computer is now configured to use the LAWN. Open a web browser, and you will see the login screen to connect to the web. Click the login button and you will be prompted for your prism account information. Enter the information, and click authenticate. You will be connected to the network.
