Windows XP SP1 Example

This will explain how to configure Windows XP with the Service Pack 1 patch to use the Georgia Tech LAWN. We recommend that you download Service Pack 2 if possible. It is now available from the Micrsoft site. This does not cover wireless cards that rely upon vendor-specific configuration utilities. This does not cover the installation of the card itself, though typically this consists of nothing more than inserting the card and allowing Windows to do the rest.

Open the Network Connections window from the Control Panel.

Right-click on the Wireless Network Connection and choose Properties.

Select the Wireless Networks tab(if you are connecting in Technology Square, please see the special instructions below).

Click the Add... button.

Note: If the Wireless Networks tab does not appear, uninstall your wireless
network card from the Device Manager and reinstall it using the Add Hardware
Wizard.

Enter "GTwireless" in the Network name (SSID) field.

Check the box next to Data encryption (WEP enabled).

Enter the encryption key in the Network key field. If you do not have it, you can find it on the web.

Enter the key again in the Confirm network key field.

Uncheck the box next to The key is provided for me automatically.

When you are done, it should look just like this the image to the right.

Click OK.

Restart your computer to ensure that the changes take effect and that your PC will request an IP address.

Launch your favorite web browser. You should be redirected to the LAWN login page. Once you are logged in, you may use the network.

Versions of XP previous to SP2 may require additional configuration to allow access to the LAWN where the FASTPASS network is available.

In Technology Square and a growing number of locations on campus, you may see something like this on the Wireless Networks tab:

You will need to remove references to FASTPASS and replace them with GTwireless.

Highlight "FASTPASS" in the Preferred Networks section and click Remove.

Highlight "FASTPASS" in the Available Networks section and click Configure.
Remove "FASTPASS" from the Network name (SSID) field and resume the directions above.
