Windows XP SP2 Example

This will explain how to configure Windows XP to use the Georgia Tech LAWN. This does not cover wireless cards that rely upon vendor-specific configuration utilities. This does not cover the installation of the card itself, though typically this consists of nothing more than inserting the card and allowing Windows to do the rest.

Open the Network Connections window from the Control Panel.

Right-click on the Wireless Network Connection and choose Properties.

Select the Wireless Networks tab.

Click the Add... button.

Note: If the Wireless Networks tab does not appear, uninstall your wireless network card from the Device Manager and reinstall it using the Add Hardware Wizard.

Enter "GTwireless" in the Network name (SSID) field.

For Network Authentication, choose "Open".

For Data encryption, choose "WEP".

Enter the encryption key (WEP) in the Network key field. If you do not have the WEP key, you may get from the LAWN SSID and WEP key webpage.

Enter the (WEP) key again in the Confirm network key field.

Uncheck the box next to "The key is provided for me automatically".

When you are done, it should look just like this the image to the right.

Click OK then click OK again.

After a few seconds, you should see a message in your system tray.

Launch your favorite web browser. You should be redirected to the LAWN login page. Once you are logged in, you may use the network.

Still not connected to GTWireless?

One thing that might be happening is that FASTPASS might be in the preferred network list above GTWireless. If this is the case, you will want to change that to have GTWireless as the preferred network above FASTPASS. Below is help on how to change that.

If you see this in your system tray, then double click on it.
The wireless network connection screen will show you what networks your devices in seeing. If it is seeing FASTPASS as a first priority, you will want to change your settings to GTWireless.
Select "Change advanced settings"
Select OK.
Select GT wireless and use the "Move Up" button to make it the first item in the list. Select OK.
You should now see this as your new network settings. This prioritizes GTwireless over FASTPASS.
