Connectivity

Your connectivity to the network can depend on a variety of factors.

  • Your location on campus - please check to see if your current location is currently covered.
  • Your device configuration - see our configuration page to see if you need to reconfigure your device.
  • The need to login many times
  • The network's performance

If you are a MAC OSX user and you find that you are unable to associate with the LAWN, or you are unable to get an IP address using DHCP, you might find success by re-entering the WEP key.

When you do so, you should use the hex key that is provided on this site, not the ASCII version if you think you know it. It also seems to help if you specify the wireless security as "WEP 40/128bit hex" instead of using "WEP password".

Is anybody experiencing problems to connect to the wireless network in the Love building? I could connect without any problem before the break and now the connection icon in the system tray says "low connectivity" and I'm unable to access the LAWN login page. Any suggestion?

I recently have been experiencing very long delays from the time I log-on to Windows XP Pro (SP2) to the time all the services load up and I am able to run applications. I only experience this problem when I am on GaTech's campus in a Wireless enabled building. For example, when I'm at my house (equipped with basic Wifi router) I have no problems booting up--I logon within seconds. However, at GT everytime I turn my laptop on it takes 5 minutes from the time I log-on to windows to the time I'm able to run applications. Many times it just hangs with no response. When I turn off the wireless radio manually on the computer it boots and logs-on fine...no delay. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem and if so what solutions I might try. I'm wondering if it has something to do with the Wireless connection waiting for an IP address or something (since I don't have this problem at home). This scenario is 100% reproducible over and over again (home vs. GT). Any ideas?

I have a problem with the LAWN wireless since last Friday (May 6th 2005) for the last 6 days.

I get connected as usual, but every 4 minutes, the DNS is gone and so is my connection. Explorer/Firefox keeps "looking for host x", pings to DNS and gateway does not comeback. However, the GTwireless signal strength is the same.

When I say "repair", everything turns to normal. But just for 4 more minutes, after that the same problem.

I am in TSRB and I experience this problem only in some parts of the building.

I have that same 4-minute type problem-- I keep getting dropped in the Physics building. It's more of 2 minutes or less sometimes-- very unreliable connection. It's been this way for the last few weeks in this building, lecture halls 2 and 4.

I have the dreaded Intel 2200BG wireless card in my Dell Inspiron 600M. I have read many forums with no luck and was hoping someone here has had the same problem and know the solution.

My wireless card will connect with no problems but then drop randomly every 10 to 15 minutes. I have only used my wireless card at the CoC and the new management building, but my other laptop worked flawlessly there, so I am pretty sure its the intel card.

LAWN leases are 10 minutes long. Renewing your lease at any point will only yeild a 10 minute lease... it's not addative. Provided your host OS is doing it's job, you should have no trouble renewing your lease and staying logged in.

So what do you mean by "dropped"? Do you mean that the radio signal dissapears, or that you have to re-authenticate? or something else?

I also have the same long windows bootup problems when on gtwireless network, but it only happens sometimes... like when i was in the ES&T building it happened but now im in the library and it was fine. Perhaps there are different routers or something? However its happened in the library too. This only recently started happening summer05 never had a problem before.

Yesterday (Tuesday), I could not get connected via GTwireless in the COC. I only tried in the common area. From the rumblings I heard around me, others could not log on either. I recieved a "Limited or No Connectivity" warning from winXP. The walkup ports worked fine, however. I was also able to connect to FASTPASS (wireless) without a problem. Today in the Student Center, I can easily access GTwireless.

I am having trouble staying connected to wireless LAWN in Love building. It connects once in a while. When it does connect, I get excellent signal; but then the browser does not take me to the LOGIN page most of the time. When it does and I login, it takes me to the home page. Beyond that I cannot access any other page.

I was having the same problems with losing connection every 10 minutes, but they went away since modifying the properties of the wireless connection. Try this:

Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections -> Network Connections -> Wireless Network Connection -> Properties -> GTwireless Properties -> Authentication -> Uncheck "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network"

    Hope this helps.

The option to enable IEEE authentication is unchecked by default. Since then, I've tried using 2 other USB wifi adapters, both of which also consistently lose and regain connection.

I took my laptop in to OIT today and it turned out my firewall was blocking the servers ICMP echo requests.

Make sure that your firewall allows ICMP incoming echo requests and outgoing echoes. If you have security concerns open it up only to the LAWN IP's.

    I hope this Helps

How does one go about connecting a Wii to GTWireless?

For connecting a Wii to GTwireless:

    Requirements:
a.) Laptop or other computer that can connect to GTwireless normally.
b.) Decent signal (5.5 mbps or greater; this is relatively low)
    c.) Nintendo Wii

    Procedure
1.) Connect your laptop or computer to GTwireless as usual. Login with your name and password.

2.) Windows XP Users: go to "Control Panel\Network Connections\Wireless Network Connection". Click the "support" tab, "details" button. You should see the following information displayed:

    Physical Address
    IP Address
    Subnet Mask
    Default Gateway
    DHCP Server
    Lease Obained*
    Lease Expires*
    DNS Servers

*you can ignore the lease information; you won't need it.

Mac/Linux Users: Open your wireless connection manager of choice and find this information. I only know how to do this in Windows and one Linux wi-fi manager, so you're on your own here.

3.) Power on your Wii. From the main menu, click the "Wii" button in the bottom-left corner, and follow this sequence of screens:

"Wii Settings, Wii Settings 2 ('+' once), Internet, Connection Settings, Connection X (whichever is open), Wireless Connection, Manual Setup."

4.) Enter the SSID as "GTwireless". From now on, assume everything is case-sensitive. Push '+' once.

5.) You should be at "Type of Security." Choose "WEP" and enter the GTwireless WEP code. If you don't know it, you can obtain it at the following address:

    http://www.lawn.gatech.edu/help/wep.html

Click "okay" or "save" (I forget what it's called) to go back to the "Type of Security screen."

6.) Press '+' again to go to "Auto-Obtain IP Address." Choose "no," "advanced settings." Enter any information it asks for from the "wireless connection information" window open on your computer.

7.) Press '+' again to go to "Auto-Obtain DNS." Choose "no," "advanced settings." Again, enter the information from your computer window into the fields.

8.) Turn off your computer's wireless card (or the computer itself). Since the Wii and your computer now have the same IP, only one can be on at a time, lest they interfere with each other.

The Wii will now test the internet connection.

9.) Save the whole thing and return to the Wii's "Home" menu.

**NOTE: Repeat connections are less of a hassle

The next time you want to go online with your Wii, do Steps 1-2.

Find your GTwireless connection in the Wii's Internet settings. Compare the saved information on the Wii to the new information on your computer, and re-enter any information that has changed to what is displayed on your computer monitor (IP address always changes, for example).

Finally, do steps 8-9 again. Switching your computer's wireless off is MOST important.

Also, when you're done with your Wii, turn your computer's wireless card back on. Because both are set to the same IP address, they can't both be logged onto GTwireless at the same time. If you want to use the internet on your computer at the same time, an ethernet cable will plug you right into the land line.

    Hope this helps! Enjoy!

For connecting a Wii to wireless with a Mac.

In order to find the info needed.
    Go to System Preferences-->Network--> TCP/IP
    You will see
    IP address
    subnet mask
    router

then, in order to find the DNS servers, open Terminal (the application) and type in the following without the quotes:
    "cat /etc/resolv.conf"
it will output 2 addresses, the first address is the primary and the 2nd is the secondary.

make sure to disable your airport again on your mac before running the connection test!

Ubuntu users: I've found that using NetworkManager to connect requires me to first connect to fastpass network (to get the MAC address), then manually connect to gtwireless. The issue probably comes from two networks coming from the same mac address.

I have the exact same problem as GT72. Followed the directions and troubleshooting for seeing Fastpass (but not GTwireless) to the T and it's still not being seen.

GT72 does your laptop have a Broadcomm wireless chip? I'm thinking this might be a problem with the driver (if I play around with the settings I can get it to be connected to Fastpass but Windows doesn't know it and says I'm disconnected in the icon tray).

I have a brand new MacBook and am experiencing "connection timeout" errors when I try to create a GTwireless connection using WEP 40/128-bit hex (as instructed). I can connect on a one-time basis, the connection won't persist over sessions (which should work)

I did some Google searches, it appears this is a common problem people are experiencing on OS X Leopard machines connecting to NetGear routers. I'm on campus (in College of Architecture building) and wonder if we have NetGear routers here. But I can't be the only person experiencing this problem. Has anyone else found a fix?
