WEP is a protocol that adds security to wireless local area networks (WLANs)
based on the 802.11 Wi-Fi standard. WEP is a security technology that
tries to give wireless networks the level of privacy protection of a wired
network. However, you should not rely on WEP to secure the data you transmit
on the LAWN. WEP is largely used to obscure the LAWN from outsiders. The
security features of WEP have been proven weak, allowing others to easily
see the contents of packets that are sent in the clear (un-encrypted).
You need to obtain the WEP key and configure it into
your laptop in order to gain wireless access. There are two ways to
get the key. One is to talk to the OIT Technology Support Center in the
Resource Center on the bottom floor of the Library at 404-894-7173.
They can give you the key if you bring Georgia
Tech identification with you. Another way is to use the LAWN SSID and WEP
key webpage. You will need your GT account username and password
in order for the webpage to display the LAWN SSID and WEP key.
Once you have the WEP Key, you will need to create
a network called GTwireless (SSID) on your laptop and enter the WEP
Key as the network password. How this is done varies depending on which
operating system you are using. To get information on configuring your
laptop with different operating systems, check out our configuration
page.

GTwireless does NOT broadcast its SSID. You must add it in manually and wait for it to connect. If you have a way to manage multiple SSIDs (like in XP-SP2) it must be listed before the fastpass network. Fastpass shoud really be removed from your listing, however, to make certain that it will not try to connect to it. |

Heh it isn't even listed now and I'm connected to it(?). Fastpass that is. So I can't exactly disconnect from it. Lawl. |

to connect the iphone you just have to add the wifi network yourself by typing in the ssid, then select wep for encryption type, enter the wep key, and login to lawn. After all that is done you are good to surf over wifi. |

I have a Mac and if I need to get on GTwireless I go to the AirPort symbol on my top browser and Say Join other network and then put in the name and code.
Is there a way to store GTwireless in your settings so I don't have to put in the key each time? |

Um... may I ask why GTwireless does not broadcast its ssid? It does not add extra security as there are programs to scan for hidden ssids anyways, not to mention a WEP key and password are still required to use it. In my opinion all it does is cause headaches for EVERYONE and forces me to use Windows instead of Linux. Thanks a lot. |

I have become really frustrated because my mac will not connect to GTwireless all of the time. It will connect for a matter of three seconds and then disconnect. All of the other networks show and I just sat on the phone with apple for an hour figuring out that there is no issue with my computer. Please help. |

I left at the beginning of the summer, and was able to access the network just fine on my iPod Touch, and when I came back this fall, I get the same error you have. The only thing I can think of is that GT changed something, or that the v2.0 upgrade broke networking.... I'm investigating... |

iPhone 3g 3.0 connection works for me, but requires that I don't use the GTwireless that shows up as the list of available wireless networks. Instead select "Other..." then enter GTwireless as SSID, select WEP and enter WEP Passcode.
Selecting GTwireless from the automatic list of available SSIDs resulted in asking for a password and not connecting. |

iPod touch will connect to GTwireless. First, select GTwireless and enter the WEP password that you obtained from OIT. Then launch Safari and enter your log in information on the LAWN log in page. After you have logged into LAWN, you are connected to the web. |
